Pilates is unique in that its primary focus is on the spine, pelvis, and the muscles surrounding those structures. These muscles make up what is commonly called “the core” and are essential for spinal health, balance, and proper movement of any kind. While the spine and core are the first priority, Pilates also aims to train the rest of the body with the same concepts of strength, stability, and mobility. Pilates recognizes that all parts of the human body work together as a collective whole.
At Physical Equilibrium, we believe Pilates is a useful modality in its own right. It has applications in strength, performance, and rehabilitation situations. It is low impact and perfect for people post-injury or just starting to exercise and looking to build basic strength. We also acknowledge it is one of many effective movement techniques, each with its own unique benefits. Pilates works extremely well as a compliment to other training methods, and many of our clients practice it in addition to their weight lifting, endurance training or performance sports. No matter the goal, Pilates can be a useful addition to any training program.
In our gym at 515 Madison Ave, we have a separate room dedicated to Pilates and trainers on staff who are fully certified on specialty Pilates equipment including the Reformer, Cadillac, and Wanda Chair. Our instructors generally practice a contemporary approach, but classical exercises are also incorporated. All of our instructors also have post-rehab knowledge for clients with injuries.
In addition to our Madison Ave gym, we have a beautiful gym in the heart of East Hampton which also features an area dedicated to Pilates.
I took a Pilates mat class with Jesse, and it was one of the best workouts I've been to in a while. Not too rushed, but not too slow — an intense workout that still doesn't leave you feeling burnt out. The facility is also really well kept and pleasant. Would highly recommend to anyone.

I've been strength training with Sara Dimmick, co-owner of Physical Equilibrium, for more than five years and it is a wonderful facility with fantastic instructors and equipment. I love it's small size ... definitely not a gym factory! Sara has over twenty years of experience and trains all types of athletes, in particular triathletes and marathoners. I'm an endurance cyclist and given my long hours on the bike, strength training is key to having a strong core for stability and of course lower and upper body strength to tackle the miles and the climbs. Sara also works extensively with clients with injury rehabilitation. The gym has a wonderful sunlit Pilates and yoga studio as well and private rooms for massage. I highly recommend Physical Equilibrium for its personalized service and extremely talented trainers!

The trainers here are excellent and the gym is top notch and beautiful. I've been strength training with Sara Dimmick as I train for running and triathlon. This has been game changing for my overall health and race performance.

Sara Dimmick and team at Physical Equilibrium are AMAZING! I ran my first marathon this past November in NYC. I had a very aggressive time goal and I am in my 40s - I wanted to accomplish my goal without getting injured. I was referred to Sara at Physical Equilibrium by another one of their clients. She became my marathon coach through the entire process.I worked with Sara over the many months of my training. I had an online schedule tailored just for me which included running plans, weights, cross training exercises. I met Sara in person monthly (at my choice) for adjustments in weights (form adjustment, etc). She was available through comments on Training Peaks (our training plan software) as well as via text, email and phone.

I am very happy to recommend Physical Equilibrium and to share my experience of joy and relief after the classes I attended, I m very close to the due date in my pregnancy and i could never imagine that my body was able to do so many exercise , feeling powerful and in shape as my weight has not change, it has felt healthy and magical. i am very thankful to Julia the personal trainer I worked out with and to Sara who is very experienced as a trainer and as a mom so that she could lead me and explain a lot about my physical changes. both teachers have the necessary grit and enthusiasm to inspire and stimulate in order to feel pleasure with really little effort in every movement.. thank you

I hate working out. I took a 7:30am Pilates class here with Cherry the instructor and it kicked my ass and made me feel so great the rest of the day. I haven't gone back yet but I check out the schedule all the time. The staff was all so nice. I saw a few people working out with personal trainers - seems like a really safe and nurturing place. I didn't feel uncomfortable or judged like I do when I go to some other "fancy" gyms like this one. Seems like a group of people who care about their bodies, and who have fun. Oh oh also SUPER nice changing and shower facilities! Free yoga mats (don't have to rent). Also the studio was small and they said they don't ever let the classes feel crowded so I liked that too. I will definitely go back.
